Italian cellist Lucia D’Anna began studying the cello at a young age. She trained at the Conservatorio “G. Verdi” in Milan under Marco Bernardin, and later earned both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in cello performance and music pedagogy at the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana (Switzerland), where she studied with Taisuke Yamashita and Mattia Zappa. She subsequently completed an additional year of study at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance with Zvi Plesser.
She has participated in numerous masterclasses with distinguished musicians, including Dario De Stefano; Julius Berger at the Mozarteum Salzburg Summer Academy; Zvi Plesser; Luca Franzetti; and Enrico Bronzi. Early in her career, she was appointed principal cellist of the Jugendsinfonieorchester Aargau and performed with the Bayerisches Landesjugendorchester and Jeunesses Musicales de Suisse. She was also a member of the Teatro alla Scala Academy in Milan for two years and later joined the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano.
Her performance career has taken her to Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, China, Morocco, Palestine, and Israel, where she appears regularly in solo recitals and chamber music concerts. She has a particular passion for both contemporary and Baroque music.
In the field of contemporary music, Lucia has taken part in the Neon and Caffeine festivals in Lugano and the 900 Festival, performing world premieres by living composers from various countries. She also attended a masterclass with the Arditti Quartet in the class of Lucas Fels. Together with her father-in-law, she created an original performance project combining solo cello with live painting in ink on water. She is currently conducting research on living Palestinian composers, performing their music, as well as researching Palestinian folk music.
Her interest in Baroque music began in Italy with the Accademia dell’Annunciata, under the artistic direction of Il Giardino Armonico. She studied Baroque cello with Marcello Scandelli, Martin Zeller, and Myrna Herzog, later expanding her expertise to the viola da gamba with Herzog at the Tel Aviv Conservatory. She has attended masterclasses with Rinaldo Alessandrini, Gaetano Nasillo, Paolo Beschi, Enrico Onofri, Enrico Gatti, and Wieland Kuijken.
Lucia has given cello masterclasses in Italy (Reggio Emilia) and in Ramallah. In 2022, together with Luca Franzetti and Michele Cantoni, she co-founded EMAP – Ensembles Music Academies Palestine, launching the first Baroque Academy in Bethlehem.
